Social networking systems like Friendster,
Orkut, and LinkedIn, which require acknowledgment by the recipient
in order to establish a connection, lack the same scalability
as the web. As noted by Caterina Fake, co-founder of the Flickr
photo sharing service, attention is only coincidentally reciprocal.
Social-networking companies such as MySpace and Facebook have
loyal fan bases, but they're not exactly minting money. MySpace's
projected $600 million revenue in 2008 falls far short of parent
News Corp.'s (NWS , Fortune 500 ) billion-dollar sales target
for the site.
Google uses algorithms to generate anything to do with its
business. Yahoo, with its acquisition of Flickr and Delicious
and whatever else is on the horizon, wants people - and social
networks - to define how it does business. Google, with the
cooperation of prestigious libraries, has been digitizing books
to make them findable. The practice excites futurists but angers
some publishers. Google's service is not a server--though it
is delivered by a massive collection of internet servers--nor
a browser--though it is experienced by the user within the browser.
Nor does its flagship search service even host the content that
it enables users to find.

Google, Yahoo, MSN, Technorati, Digg, del.icio.us - as well
color-code results, set the slider for results per page, turn
on auto-completion on or off, and more. Not a bad start to partitioning
search results meaningfully. Google Chrome pointed into that
direction, a browser that is faster and more lightweight in
its user interface. Of course it has nothing to do with cloud
computing as such but it demonstrates that the user interface
of the client will only get easier and you won't install complex
local software anymore except the elementary stuff.
Users will visit the site to find the pick-up dates and rules.
Nonetheless, the Christmas tree pick-up page is an example of
how government websites can offer taxpayers great ROI : if done
right, this one page will save the city from answering endless
phone calls — each costing $10 or more. Users enter their
professional history, listing jobs and other activities relative
to their professional growth path. As they conduct business,
they add their professional connections to their network.
Tagging projects are constantly emerging to help gather information
and share knowledge. For instance, the nonprofit technology
community created its own NPTech tag on del.icio.us to share
knowledge among people in the field. Tags are a huge focus of
the site; every post/bookmark features tags to make it more
accessible. You can share your bookmarks with family and friends,
which is a great way to show them what you're interested in.
